Heartfelt congratulations to my lovely Komedia Brighton comedy course graduate the unstoppable Angela Barnes on taking over as the new host of BBC Radio 4's "Newsjack." I'm so excited for her because this is a job she really wanted and she's perfect for it. Angela told me she'd auditioned for the "Newsjack" host job when she MC'd my comedy fledglings "New Act Night" show at Komedia last week. Six days later and we can now officially uncross all our fingers.
Here's what Sioned Wiliam, Commissioning Editor for Comedy for BBC Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra, said about it: “It will be great having Angela on board for the next series of Newsjack – she’s a funny writer and a brilliant performer, and is already a great friend to the show.”
Angela isn't the first of my comedy course graduates to host "Newsjack." The first was my equally unstoppable graduate Romesh Ranganathan. This kind of thing happening always makes me think - who's next? And - what's next - for this wonderful graduate? Watching their journeys from the start is so exciting, and it's such a privilige to be a part of it.
I feel very lucky that Angela still considers compering my twice yearly "New Act Night" shows a diary highlight. She does the job beautifully, understands how my fledglng newie comedians feel, as she was once in their shoes, and she always spoils the newbies. This time she gave each one a christmas card, a notepad, a pen and a chocolate Santa. How nice is that?!
I have to admit we do all spoil our newbies. My advanced workshop left a good luck card and a huge hamper of sweets backstage for them. Komedia gave them more sweets, chips and a free drink when they came off stage. My Autumn 2017 fledglings didn't let nerves interfere with eating their way through most of their backstage feast! The few sweets they didn't eat backstage during the show I took to the pub for them; where celebrations were in full swing until long after I left.
My Autumn 2016 stand-up comedy course at Komedia, Brighton stand-up comedy fledglings put on a tremendous "New Act Night" show. The main space at Komedia Brighton was packed with a super supportive very happy audience. It was a total joy to watch newbie after newbie take to the stage and triumph in front of a huge audience of 230 at Komedia. And my lovely comedy course newbies are all still bubbling with excitement and high on their first time on stage experience. Again I have to think - who's next? And I can't wait to do it all again on my Spring 2017 stand-up comedy course at Komedia, Brighton.
