I'm sending out proud and heartfelt congratulations to my stand-up comedy course at Komedia Brighton graduate Christian Jegard. He's made it into the Finals of Leicester Comedy Festival's highly prestigious comedy competition "Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year." I'm so excited for him!
What makes this comedy competition so special is that a comedian has to be nominated by more than one established comedy club promoter to get straight into the Final. There's no competion heats and it's not a competition comedians can apply to enter. It's all about which fast rising new acts comedy club promoters have enjoyed over the past year. The line-ups for the Final are, as a result - always fantastic. If you've never been to a Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Final - go! It's always a brilliant show.
This comedy competition has previously been won by my Komedia Brighton comedy course graduates Seann Walsh and Romesh Ranganathan. My comedy workshop graduates Ingrid Dahle, David Jordan and Dinesh Nathan all made it into the Final in previous years with Ingrid Dahle taking the runner-up spot.
Christian Jegard is relatively new to the comedy scene. He was one of the newest comedians to make it into the "Komedia New Comedy Award" Final in 2020 - just before the pandemic hit the UK. During the pandemic Christian went online and he's made some fantastic award winning online comedy sketches and songs. He won the British Comedy Guide's pro Video Contest in 2020. He was also a Finalist in Sketched Out at the Comedy Store, Musical Comedy Awards, Chortlist, Austin Comedy Film Festival and was Runner Up in the Comedy Crowd TV Showcase. I could not be prouder of Christian. He's a real "one to watch."
